One of the most important works of world film production. It is not a tightly wound film drama, but essentially a series of loosely connected stories and episodes, describing with unusual frankness the moral decay of the higher social circles. Its central character is the journalist Marcello, a basically serious and earnest man, who, however, in the course of his work has learned the sweet life of high society and succumbed to it. He becomes the hero of erotic scandals, of wild parties in villas and castles that degenerate into drinking and orgies, of wasted nights followed by a murky morning that reveals the flipside of this life. Two people could help him in his present mental crisis: the philosophising writer Steiner and the young girl Paola. But the former ends in a hard-to-understand suicide, and Paola's voice, calling Marcello to a better life, is too weak and fades away in the general turmoil.
