Cutting the wrong wire of a time bomb demolishes not only the seven-story building, but also Detective Murtaugh's dream of a peaceful retirement in a few days. He and his somewhat deranged partner Riggs end up on the beat, and the investigation of their case - the theft of weapons from police warehouses - is taken up by Sergeant Lorna Cole, a policewoman with nerves of steel and a perfect knowledge of oriental martial arts. At first, she refuses to cooperate with the former detectives, but eventually takes them and their acquaintance Leo Getz, a real estate agent and enthusiastic collaborator, into her good graces. The search leads to Travis, a former police officer. Surrounded by a gang of sharp guys, this rival seems to be beyond the three detectives and their sidekick due to his knowledge of police methods. The fierce struggle for survival comes to a head, and after the discovery of special bulletproof vest piercing ammunition in the gangsters' armoury, Murtaugh loses confidence that he will live to see his dream retirement.
