The story is set in one of the possible near futures. Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) is a sensitive man who writes personal letters for a living. He is coming out of a breakup with his longtime love Catherine (Rooney Mara). Theodore is offered the chance to install a revolutionary new operating system that is much more personal than the current smart operating systems. Theodore chooses a female voice and names her Samantha. It's one step closer to a unique relationship. But can a relationship between a human being and a computer system really be real?
