Andrew Neiman is a young drummer of 19, he’s just been accepted in the prestigious Shaffer’s Conservatory of New York where he meets Terence Fletcher, director of the conservatory’s big Band. Terence is obsessed with perfection and behaves like an absolute tyrant towards his students. He justifies his harsh methods by a single anecdote: The great Charlie Parker only became “Bird” after Jo Jones threw a cymbal at his head for being mediocre. Eager to impress his teacher, and hoping to become the next Buddy Rich, Andrew will spend an entire year training night and day. He breaks up with his girlfriend, isolates himself and repeatedly injures his hands during too intense training sessions. One day, late for a competition with the big band Andrew will even drag himself on stage despite a major car crash he just went through. Incapable of playing because of his injuries Andrew is laid off by Fletcher on stage in front of a jury which could supposedly define his carrier. This is the breaking point for Neiman who throws himself at Fletcher. After the incident Andrew decides to anonymously testify again his teacher for moral harassment. A few years later, we learn that Flecher was also laid off after the accusation of harassment, but managed to find another band, and the two character then gather for a last and epic performance...
