Virgil Oldman (Geoffrey Rush) is a world-renowned expert in fine art and antiques. In his personal life, however, he is a reclusive recluse haunted by many obsessions. He has never been able to connect with another person, is unable to work with anyone and has never fallen in love with a woman in his life. He is therefore considered an eccentric genius by those around him. His only close relationship is with Robert (Jim Sturgess), a young and skilled restorer of vintage mechanical movements and clocks. But even this relationship cannot be called personal. The only thing Virgil devotes his passion to is his secret collection of female portraits of all artistic styles and periods, which he helps to replenish with Billy Whistler (Donald Sutherland), the other person he is willing to let into his private life.

And so his life runs completely without emotion or unexpected changes. It's not until the day of his sixty-third birthday that he receives an unexpected phone call from an unknown woman (Sylvia Hoeks) who introduces herself as Claire Ibbetson. She urgently asks for his help in appraising and selling the inherited family art collection. Virgil finally accepts her offer and arrives at the appointed time at the old house, which is filled with old paintings, sculptures and furniture. His new client, however, does not show up for the appointment. With The Help of further phone calls, Claire gradually persuades him to make further attempts to meet her, which in the end do not happen again.

Thus begins a strange game that begins to attract him. He tries to find out the identity of this mysterious woman and, by means of a trick, discovers that Claire is young, very beautiful and suffers from a panic terror of the outside world. That's why she lives in the hidden rooms of the old house. Robert begins to advise Virgil on how to win the heart of a woman who has hidden herself from the world, Step by step. Virgil finds himself in the throes of passion and in the middle of a game that will change his grey life forever.
