Two detectives, a rookie and a veteran, hunt a serial killer who uses the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi.

The movie follows two detectives, William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and David Mills (Brad Pitt), who are investigating a series of brutal murders in a city. The killer, who calls himself "John Doe," is targeting victims he believes are guilty of one of the Seven Deadly Sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, envy, wrath, pride, and lust.
As the investigation progresses, the detectives uncover clues that lead them to gruesome crime scenes, each one representing a different sin. The killer seems to be always one step ahead of them, and the detectives struggle to keep up with his twisted logic.
The tension rises as the detectives get closer to identifying the killer, but they are constantly faced with ethical dilemmas, and the line between justice and revenge starts to blur. In the end, they discover that the killer's ultimate goal was to become the embodiment of the seventh sin, "wrath," and the detectives must race against time to prevent his plan from being carried out.
