This time, director Woody Allen's European tour took him to the capital of Italy, where he played with the fates of several different people. The film is composed of four short stories. In the first story, an elderly married couple (Judy Davis and Woody Allen) arrive in Rome to meet their daughter's fiancé, who is not exactly thrilled with her neurotic father. The film's next story involves a prostitute (Penélope Cruz) who is tasked with fulfilling any wish of a client who has little idea what the strange woman wants from him. In the next segment, an Italian mob mistakes a man (Roberto Benigni) for a movie star and his life takes a 180. In the last short story, we visit a young American couple (Greta Gerwig and Jesse Eisenberg) whose lives are shuffled by two unexpected visitors played by Ellen Page and Alec Baldwin.
