Jean Valjean got caught for stealing a piece of bread for his starving family. Thanks to unsuccessful escape attempts, he was released from forced labour after twenty years, in 1812, as a true criminal who lies and steals without scruples. It was the incredible kindness of the old bishop, who denied his robbery to the police, that gave Valjean the strength to change his fate. Ten years later, the former galley-boy is the respected mayor of Vigau. Unfortunately, Inspector Javert, who knows Valjean from the galleys, is appointed the new head of the local police.

The mayor manages to hide his true identity, but the suspicious policeman devises a cunning plan to force a confession out of him. Meanwhile, the ex-convict, now a respectable man with a big heart, takes in his sick wife Fantine and promises on his deathbed to take care of her daughter Cosette, who is a slave in the inn of the cunning villain Thernadier.

Javert's diabolical plan to arrest the ex-convict would have worked if Valjean hadn't managed to escape at the last minute. He and little Cosette then find shelter in a Parisian convent. But the fates of Javert and Valjean will once more fatefully intersect during the bloody Paris Revolution of 1832.
