The movie describes the events of 1941 when, after a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour the Japanese turned to China and among the first goal was just Shanghai. Only eleven Jim Graham, the son of British diplomats, was lost his parents in the confusion after the arrival of Japanese soldiers. His parents need to flee the country. The luxury they enjoy in a prison camp Suzhou, where his psyche changes from child naivety and carelessness on the bare desire to survive at all costs.

When we meet Jamie Graham (Christian Bale) it is 1941 and he and his wealthy British parents are living in Shanghai. Graham lives a very privileged life—one might even say spoiled—and he is accustomed to having whatever he needs whenever he needs it. When World War II breaks out, Graham and his family attempt to escape but are separated in all the commotion. Graham watches a man die in front of his eyes, and he begins to realize that his life will never be the same. Graham returns to his childhood home where he stays as long as he can find food. When food runs out and his next plan-of-actions fail, he meets Jim (John Malkovich) who befriends him and teaches him how to survive. The two end up in a Japanese prison camp, and by now, Graham has begun to shed his privileged ways and has learned a few tricks to survive, but will it be enough to come out alive at the end of the adventurer and be reunited with his parents when the war finally ends?
