In Bosnia, a prominent politician is assassinated and succeeded by Dusan Gavric (Marcel Iures), and at the same time, without any apparent connection, an extraordinary train carrying ten atomic warheads leaves the missile base in Chelyabinsk, Russia, in accordance with the START agreement on the partial dismantling of atomic warheads. It is commanded by a young officer, Vasily, a subordinate of General Kodorov (Alexander BALUYEV).

The General's commandos from his parallel train ambush his escort. He murders the soldiers and transfers the cargo as they ride. The train with the dead crew then collides with a passenger train. According to Kodorov's insidious plan, a single warhead explodes here, causing disaster. The train with Kodorov's squad and the other 9 warheads survives the explosion in the tunnel, and then makes its way by truck to Iran to meet cargo buyers. Thanks to information from the Russian generals, a team at the Pentagon, led by atomic weapons expert Dr. Julie Kelly (Nicole Kidman) and intelligence officer Thomas Devoe (George Clooney), slowly succeed in uncovering the background of the case. Kelly dispatches a helicopter with an ambush team from Turkey in pursuit of the car with the warheads.

Kodorov's team includes an associate of his first buyer, who jumps out of the car with one of the warheads. The Americans manage to retrieve the other warheads after a successful ambush. However, one warhead is still missing. Devoe and Kelly visit an arms dealer in Vienna as bogus bidders, from whom they manage to obtain documents with the mysterious 44E note. They manage to eliminate his entire group of assassins and its leader (Lubomir Paulovich). The only member of Kodorov's commando to survive the ambush reveals the Yugoslavian direction of the missing warhead.

In Sarajevo, however, the commander (Martin Nikodým) of the KFOR unit finds only a videotape in Gavric's apartment with a message that it will explode in the U.S. in retaliation for the "peacemakers" in the Balkans. The search continues in New York, where, of course, according to the information received, he is eventually found and saves the world at the last moment from an atomic catastrophe.
