The Red Baron, written and directed by Nikolai Muellerschoen (b. 1958), who has worked in the United States and his native Germany, describes the war years of legendary German World War I pilot Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918). It focuses in particular on his unorthodox, seemingly gentlemanly and sporting approach to aerial combat, coupled with a comradely respect for his opponent, his friendship with his colleagues and, conversely, his disdain for his superiors and military drill, but most importantly, it records Manfred's love affair with his nurse, Käte Otersdorf. The story takes place between 1916 and 1918, and in the background it affects the change in Manfred's attitude towards the war and its unfavourable development for the German side.- The largely romanticised conception is supported by the cinematography, typical of the retro-genre, with an emphasis on period realities and on the visual aspect. There are also attractive aerial battles, processed, of course, by means of visual effects.
