Barbra Streisand stars in this beautifully rendered story of a young and independent woman who is forced to impersonate a boy to satisfy her thirst for knowledge. Barbra Streisand's directorial debut Jentl is a musical adaptation of the story of Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer. Jentl (Barbra Streisand) is a young woman who longs only to be able to study the Scriptures. However, because she is a woman, she is denied this opportunity. So she decides to marry a young man named Anshel and begins her dream studies. She soon becomes close to her classmate Avigdor (Mandy Patinkin) and eventually falls in love with him. However, she cannot reveal her true identity as it would mean the end of her studies. Avigdor loves Hadassah (Amy Irving), but religious rules forbid him to marry her. So he tries to set her up with Anshel, with the result that Hadass falls in love with Anshel. The film earned four Academy Award nominations, including two for Best Song, and is considered by many to be the role of a lifetime for Barbra Streisand. The Czech contribution to the film is especially evident in the familiar exteriors, which support this charming and sensitive story of a Polish Jewish girl who, although forbidden by the rigid rules of her faith, yearns for an education.

Filming Locations:

Most of the scenes in Jentl were filmed in the Czech Republic. Most of the film takes place in Žatec, Český Krumlov and Prague.
