John Forbes Nash (Russell Crowe) seems to have it all—he is a brilliant mathematician at the top of his field. His accolades gain the attention of William Parcher (Ed Harris) who asks John if he can be of service to him breaking codes for the CIA. Miraculously, he is able to break the codes all in his head. With Parcher, he begins working on finding patterns in order to stop a Soviet plot. John becomes both obsessed and paranoid working the case and is convinced he is being followed.

Around this time, he meets and marries his beautiful wife Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). They are happy and in love, but shortly into their marriage, Alicia begins to suspect that something with John is not quite right. His paranoia is getting worse.

John, although brilliant, is not well. His grip on reality and his sanity is faltering. Soon, he is diagnosed with schizophrenia and the prognosis is not good.

Despite Alicia’s constant help, John struggles to maintain a normal life with the disease. Decades go by besieged with delusions and frequent episodes. John is a constant burden to his loved ones and must endure as his disease takes a toll on the relationships that mean the most to him. Despite the mental disease, will his brilliant mind survive?
