We follow the stories of nearly two dozen people who experience romantic moments or embarrassing setbacks during this festive day. Among the participants is florist Reed, who has just proposed to his lovely girlfriend Morley. His best friend, Julia, a teacher, is alone on Valentine's Day, while her cardiologist boyfriend Harrison is away on business in San Francisco. The enthusiasm of his fellow romantics is not shared by sports editor Kelvin, who has been "demoted" to the society section and is now forced to go around town interviewing the amorous populace. One of the lucky ones interviewed is Reed. Thanks to the TV interview, crowds of customers are heading to his flower shop. Harrison orders two bouquets from him, one for his wife Pamela, the other for Julia, at which point Reed realizes that his friend is in for a big disappointment. A little boy, Edison, also comes into the florist's shop to buy flowers for his love. His mother is abroad on business, so the boy is raised by his grandparents, Edgar and Estelle, who still love each other deeply after fifty years of marriage. As Valentine's Day draws to a close, Holden's plane lands at the Los Angeles airport. During the long flight, he meets Kate, an officer in the U.S. Army who is returning home from a long tour of duty for just one day. He assumes that Kate is flying to visit her boyfriend, but the truth is different; Kate is flying to see her son Edison.
