It's Mark's lucky day, he's just been promoted to Separations Manager at Lumon Industries. His predecessor, Petey, and one-time best friend quit overnight. And so Mark's first duty is to take on a new colleague. But the colleague doesn't remember anything and doesn't know where she is. And so it's okay, because working in the Separation Department has a special mode: every time employees come to work, their memory switches: they remember nothing in their personal life at work, and they remember nothing in their personal life in their work life.

However, that very evening, Petey catches Mark at dinner. Mark, of course, doesn't recognize him, but Petey insists that he must confide what's going on behind the walls at Lumon Industries...
