The story follows the fortunes of the middle-class Bennet family living on the Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire. Mrs. Bennet tries to get all her daughters married off quickly and well, as she fears that after her husband's death, when a large part of their property goes to Mr. Bennet's heir, his nephew, Mr. Collins, it will be impossible to get any husbands for her daughters with the small dowry left. At one of the local balls, the eldest of the five Bennet sisters, the beautiful Jane, falls in love with the young and wealthy Mr. Bingley, who has recently moved to the nearby Netherfield estate. The second oldest of the sisters, Elizabeth also meets Bingley's even richer friend, Mr. Darcy, who, however, seems arrogant and measured. Elizabeth's antipathy towards Mr. Darcy grows even more, when she meets the officer, the handsome Mr. Wickham, who tells her about an alleged wrong done to him by Mr. Darcy in the past. Darcy unexpectedly reveals his love to Elizabeth, but she rejects him because, in addition to his arrogance, she blames him for dissuading Mr. Bingley from marrying Jane and for the injustice he was supposed to do to Mr. Wickham. Eventually it is revealed, that George Wickham, who later flees to London with the youngest of the Bennet sisters Lydia, lied to Elizabeth about his relationship with Mr. Darcy. He had kept quiet that he had once tried to elope with Darcy's younger sister Georgiana and, as a protégé of Darcy's father, had wrongfully extorted a considerable sum of money from him. After the generous Darcy pays off Wickham's debts, Wickham marries the naive Lydia Bennet. This move by Darcy will definitely convince Elizabeth of his nature and relationship with her, and in the end Elizabeth will marry Mr. Darcy and Jane will marry Mr. Bingley.
