Luther (Idris Elba), a tough London Major Crimes Unit detective, is the type of internally torn hero who must deal with his inner demons in addition to solving criminal cases. He's a man who sacrifices everything for his job, and it rewards him with hell. At one point, it is suggested that if he had read a different book at the right time in his life, he could have been someone else entirely, like a priest.

John Luther is no ordinary detective. He uses unorthodox methods in his investigations, disregarding established procedures and pursuing his own concept of justice. Idris Elba, who won the prestigious Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Mini-Series or Television Movie for his riveting portrayal of the ambiguous hero, excels in the title role. The dark tone of the series is matched by the overall visual style, which is an integral part of its success.

The special care given to the musical component also corresponds to the high quality of the production. Alongside trip-hop legends Massive Attack, whose Paradise Circus underscores the opening title sequence, the end of each episode features a carefully chosen song by such musical greats as Marilyn Manson, Muse, Beck, Nina Simone and Grinderman.
